Blank bus-stop division template printable showing pre-drawn division brackets with space for quotient digits and remainder working

Bus-Stop Division Template

Short/long division frame, blank.

The Bus-Stop Division Template provides the classic short-division (and long-division) bracket frame in a clean, printable format. The iconic curved bracket — nicknamed the 'bus stop' because the dividend sits inside like passengers waiting — is pre-drawn with ample space above the bracket for quotient digits and space below for remainders or long-division subtraction steps. Students in Grades 3–7 use it when learning short division with remainders and again when advancing to the formal long-division algorithm. Having the bracket already printed means students do not spend lesson time constructing the shape and can concentrate entirely on the division process. Teachers appreciate that multiple frames fit on a single A4 page, making it ideal as a quick independent practice sheet or a homework drill.

Learning objectives

  • Practise short-division within the formal bus-stop bracket frame
  • Progress smoothly from short to long division using the same template
  • Record remainders clearly above or beside each quotient digit
  • Develop left-to-right digit-by-digit division habits
  • Build automaticity with divisors from 2 through 12
  • Prepare for dividing decimals and larger dividends in upper primary

How to use this template

  1. Download and print the template — each sheet contains six or more pre-drawn bus-stop brackets.
  2. Write the divisor to the left of the bracket and the dividend inside the bracket, one digit per cell.
  3. Work left to right: determine how many times the divisor fits into the first digit (or first two digits) and write the quotient above the bracket.
  4. Record any remainder as a small superscript beside the next digit inside the bracket and continue.
  5. For long division, use the space below the bracket to show each subtraction step, then bring down the next digit.

Classroom & home ideas

  • Division relay: each student in a group completes one digit of the quotient before passing the sheet to the next — great for keeping everyone engaged.
  • Estimate first: before working the bus-stop, students jot their estimated quotient to the side and compare it with their exact answer at the end.
  • Remainder investigations: use the template with purposely chosen dividends to explore which numbers give a remainder of 0, 1, 2 etc. for a fixed divisor.
  • Speed grids: project a set of division facts; students race to complete one bus-stop frame per minute as a mental agility drill.
  • Parent workshop handout: include one completed example alongside a blank frame so families can support the same method at home.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between short and long division on this template?

Short division keeps all working above the bracket as small remainder superscripts. Long division uses the sub-bracket space below for written subtraction steps — both fit the same printed frame.

How many digits can the dividend have?

The standard frame accommodates dividends of up to six digits. For longer dividends, print two frames and link them with an arrow.

Can I use this template for decimal division?

Yes — mark a decimal point in the appropriate cell inside the bracket and align the corresponding decimal point above in the quotient row.

At what grade should students start using this template?

Most students are ready around Grade 3 for short division with single-digit divisors. Long division with two-digit divisors typically begins in Grades 5–6.
