Rainbow Writing Lines
Trace-over guideline rows for letter formation.
Rainbow Writing Lines is a blank trace-over handwriting template designed for PreK and Kindergarten students who are just beginning to form letters. The page features horizontal guideline rows with a base line, mid line, and top line clearly marked, giving young learners the spatial boundaries they need to practice letter strokes. Students trace the same letter multiple times in different crayon colors, creating a rainbow effect that makes repetition feel playful rather than tedious. Teachers use this template during morning warm-ups, literacy centers, or take-home homework folders. Parents find it equally useful for kitchen-table practice sessions. Because the page is completely blank except for the guide rows, it works for any letter, number, or word the child is currently learning — one sheet serves the whole alphabet.
Learning objectives
- Develop correct pencil grip and letter stroke direction
- Build muscle memory for uppercase and lowercase letter forms
- Reinforce spatial awareness between baseline and cap height
- Turn repetitive handwriting drill into an engaging, colorful activity
- Support pre-writing readiness for formal penmanship instruction
How to use this template
- Download and print the template on standard 8.5×11 paper — no special paper required.
- Write or stamp the target letter, word, or numeral lightly in pencil in the first row as a model.
- Have the student trace over it with a red crayon, then trace again in orange, yellow, and so on through the rainbow colors.
- Encourage the child to say the letter name or phoneme aloud each time they complete a trace.
- Reprint as many copies as needed — one sheet per letter, per session, or per week.
Classroom & home ideas
- Use at a literacy center where students practice the week's focus letter in rainbow colors.
- Send home in a homework folder as a low-prep, no-instructions-needed family activity.
- Laminate a copy and let students use dry-erase markers for an eco-friendly reusable version.
- Combine with alphabet flashcards — student picks a card, writes that letter across all guideline rows.
- Use during small-group RTI sessions to give struggling writers extra stroke repetitions.

Frequently asked questions
What age is the Rainbow Writing Lines template suitable for?
It is designed for PreK through Grade 1, typically ages 3–7, when children are learning basic letter and numeral formation. Advanced PreK students and early Kindergarteners benefit most.
Can I use this template for numbers as well as letters?
Yes. The guide rows have no pre-printed content, so you can use them for any symbol — uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numerals 0–9, or sight words written across the lines.
How many colors should students use?
There is no fixed rule, but tracing 3–7 times (one per rainbow color) is a natural range. Even two or three passes build meaningful muscle memory without becoming overwhelming.
Do I need to laminate the sheet for reuse?
Lamination is optional. A laminated copy with a dry-erase marker is great for centers. For homework or daily seat work, printing a fresh copy each session is just as effective.
