Blank printable class list template with numbered student name rows and empty customisable columns for teacher records

Class List Template

Blank roster page.

The Class List Template is a clean, single-page blank roster that gives teachers a ready-made student directory for any class or group. It provides numbered rows for student names alongside a few customisable columns — perfect for adding contact details, student numbers, reading levels, or any other class-specific data you track at the start of the year. Used widely by classroom teachers, specialists, after-school coordinators, and camp leaders, this flexible roster scales from a small pull-out reading group to a full class of 35. Print a fresh copy at the beginning of each term, update it when students transfer in or out, and keep it on your desk as a quick-reference hub for the whole class.

Learning objectives

  • Establish an organised master list of all students at the start of term
  • Provide a quick paper reference for seating plans, groups, and sub rolls
  • Support accurate attendance and participation tracking
  • Record supplementary student data (reading level, language background, etc.) in one place
  • Reduce search time when cross-referencing names during planning or reporting
  • Serve as a shareable roster for specialist teachers and substitutes

How to use this template

  1. Download and print the PDF on Letter or A4 paper in portrait orientation.
  2. Write the class name, teacher name, and current date or term in the header.
  3. Enter each student's name in the numbered rows — add surname-first if you prefer alphabetical sorting.
  4. Label the blank columns across the top with the data you want to capture (e.g. email, reading level, ELL status).
  5. Reprint whenever the class composition changes so every shared copy stays accurate.

Classroom & home ideas

  • Print two copies at the start of term — one for your planner and one to hand to the office as a class register.
  • Use the blank columns as quick-mark check-off boxes during homework collection or permission-slip returns.
  • Give specialist teachers (PE, Art, Music) a printed copy so they always have the correct student names without hunting through a system.
  • Create a substitute folder that includes a current class list alongside the day plan so the substitute can call the roll accurately.
  • Print a slightly enlarged version and use it as a seating-chart base by writing desk positions next to each name.

Frequently asked questions

How many students fit on one sheet?

The standard template fits 32–35 numbered rows on a single Letter or A4 page. For larger classes, print a second sheet and continue numbering from where the first page ends.

Can I add a photo column for primary teachers?

The template has blank columns you can label however you like. Write 'Photo' at the top of a column and paste or tape a small ID photo next to each name — a handy memory aid for the first few weeks.

Is it suitable for a substitute or relief teacher?

Yes — a current class list is one of the most useful documents in a substitute folder. Include it alongside the day plan and seating chart so the substitute can call the roll and manage activities confidently.

Should I include student ID numbers on the printed list?

That depends on your school's data policy. For internal classroom use it is generally fine, but redact or omit IDs on any copy shared outside your immediate teaching team.
