Twist Cube 2x2

About this simulation

This puzzle simulation lets students handle a 2x2 cube with eight corner pieces. Dragging across a face turns that layer by a quarter turn, and dragging empty space rotates the view. Scramble mixes the cube, Undo takes back a move, and a slider sets the snap speed. Readouts track moves, state, best result and time. Teachers can use it for spatial reasoning, sequencing and algorithm thinking: ask students to find a short sequence that moves one piece, then compare strategies and move counts across the class.

What students can explore

  • Press Scramble, then drag across a face to turn a layer and watch the Moves readout rise.
  • Drag empty space to rotate the cube so you can see every side before planning a turn.
  • Use Undo move to test an idea, and see whether the cube returns to its earlier state.
  • Try to beat the Best readout by solving the scrambled cube in fewer moves.
  • Change Snap speed to slow turns down and follow where each corner piece goes.

Learning objectives

  1. 1Visualize how a quarter turn moves corner pieces in 3D.
  2. 2Plan a sequence of moves to reach a goal state.
  3. 3Recognize that the order of turns changes the result.
  4. 4Compare strategies using move count and time as evidence.

Questions teachers ask

Is the Twist Cube 2x2 simulation free to use?

Yes. It is free, needs no account, and works in any modern browser on whiteboards, tablets, phones and computers.

How many positions does a 2x2 cube have?

A 2x2 cube has 3,674,160 reachable positions, and every one can be solved in 14 quarter turns or fewer.

How do I turn a layer?

Drag across a face in the direction you want the layer to turn. To change the viewing angle instead, drag on empty space. Press Scramble to begin a new puzzle.

Does the cube need matching orientation to count as solved?

No. This version counts the cube as solved when each side is a single color, in any orientation, and it then records your result as the best if it is fewer moves.
