Repeating-Pattern Template
Blank strip/grid to design a pattern.
This blank repeating-pattern template provides a ready-made strip or grid of equal-sized cells for students to design and extend their own patterns. Depending on the version, the layout is a single horizontal strip (ideal for border and frieze patterns), a square grid (for all-over repeat patterns), or a combination of both on one sheet. Students in grades K–6 use it to explore pattern in art, mathematics, and textile design without having to rule their own grids. Teachers introduce it alongside lessons on symmetry, tessellation, and decorative arts. Young students fill cells with coloured shapes using crayons; older students design more complex motifs with fine-liner and ruler. Because the cells are pre-sized, students can focus entirely on the pattern logic—colour sequence, shape alternation, rotational repeat—rather than on construction. Reprint as many copies as needed for differentiated practice.
Learning objectives
- Identify and create AB, ABC, and more complex repeating-pattern structures
- Understand the concept of a pattern unit and how it tiles across a surface
- Practise colour mixing and rhythm through sequential design choices
- Explore pattern as a design element found in textiles, architecture, and nature
- Develop spatial reasoning through regular grid-based composition
- Connect visual art pattern-making to early mathematics patterning concepts
How to use this template
- Print one copy per student—select the strip, grid, or combination layout.
- Decide on a pattern unit: a shape, colour sequence, or motif to be repeated.
- Fill in the first two or three cells to establish the pattern, then continue across the strip or grid.
- Add colour with crayons, coloured pencils, or markers—keeping the repeat consistent.
- Extend the pattern, check it, and discuss the rule that makes it a 'repeat' with a partner or teacher.
Classroom & home ideas
- Connect to a maths patterning lesson: use the strip layout to create AB, AAB, and ABC patterns with coloured counters first, then transfer the design to the printed template.
- Introduce textile design by having students create a pattern inspired by a specific culture's decorative motifs—Maori koru, West African kente, Islamic geometric repeat—using the grid layout.
- Display completed grid patterns side by side on a bulletin board to create a large patchwork-quilt effect across the whole class's work.
- Run a 'pattern hunt' walk around the school—photograph examples of repeating patterns in architecture and the environment, then recreate a favourite on the template.
- Use the strip layout for a collaborative border: each student designs one strip segment; tape them together to frame a class mural or display board.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the strip and grid layouts on this template?
The strip layout has a single row of cells running horizontally—best for linear border and frieze patterns. The grid layout has multiple rows and columns—best for all-over surface repeat patterns like fabric or wallpaper.
Is this template suitable for kindergarten students?
Yes. The larger-cell versions of the strip layout work well for K–1 students who are still developing fine motor control. Provide chunky crayons and model the pattern rule before they begin.
Can students use stamps or stickers instead of drawing?
Absolutely. Stamps, dot stickers, and cut-paper shapes all work well in the cells and can actually help younger students keep the repeat more consistent than freehand drawing.
How does this relate to maths curriculum patterning standards?
Repeating patterns are a core element of early maths (K–2) and connect to multiplication, fractions, and spatial reasoning in grades 3–6. The visual format makes the abstract rule concrete and visible.
