Biography Template

Blank frame for a person study.

The Biography Template is a structured one-page frame that guides students through the essential elements of writing about a real person's life. It includes clearly labelled sections for the subject's name, birth and death dates, place of origin, early life, major achievements, challenges overcome, and lasting legacy — plus a portrait box for a drawing or pasted image. Grades 2–7 use it for person studies in social studies, history, and literacy, whether the subject is a historical figure, a community leader, or a family member. Having the sections pre-labelled teaches students what biographies typically contain without constraining their writing style. Teachers use it as a research organiser before students write a longer essay, or as the finished product itself for younger classes. The portrait box encourages students to engage with the visual dimension of the subject's identity alongside the written content.

Frequently asked questions

Is this template suitable for writing about living people, not just historical figures?

Yes. The sections work equally well for living scientists, athletes, artists, or community figures. Simply leave the death date field blank or label it 'present'.

How long should each section be for grade 2 students?

For early writers, one or two sentences per section is ideal. The template's narrow boxes naturally limit length and prevent overwhelm.

Can this be used as a graphic organiser before writing a full essay?

Absolutely. Many teachers use it as a pre-writing research organiser, with each section becoming a paragraph in the longer final draft.

What goes in the 'legacy' section for younger students?

Guide students to answer: 'Why do we still remember this person today?' or 'What changed because of what they did?' One sentence is sufficient for early grades.
