Weather Station

About this simulation

Time passes in a friendly backyard, from sunrise to night and day after day. Change the season, the warmth, the water in the air and the wind, or set off a thunderstorm or a cold front, and read the thermometer, rain gauge and windsock like a real weather station.

What students can explore

  • Why is it colder at night than in the afternoon?
  • When does rain turn into snow?
  • What makes a thunderstorm?
  • Which way does the windsock point?

Learning objectives

  1. 1Describe the weather with words such as sunny, cloudy, rainy, snowy, windy and stormy.
  2. 2Read a thermometer, a rain gauge and a windsock to measure the weather.
  3. 3Explain why it is warmer in the afternoon than at night, and when rain turns to snow.

Questions teachers ask

What is the difference between weather and seasons?

Weather is what the air is like right now and can change in an hour. Seasons are the pattern over months: summers are usually warm and winters cold. Change the season in the lab and watch the usual weather change with it.

Why does rain sometimes turn into snow?

Cloud water falls as rain when the air is warmer than 0 °C. Below 0 °C it freezes on the way down and falls as snow, and close to 0 °C it can fall as sleet, a mix of both.

How can I use the Weather Station in class?

Pick a season and ask students what to wear. Then add water to the air or press Thunderstorm! and let them describe the change. Older children can read the thermometer, the rain gauge and the windsock and keep a weather diary.
