Lungs & breathing

About this simulation

Air travels through the trachea and bronchi. In the alveoli, oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide leaves it. Five lung lobes and conducting airways. Microscopic alveoli and the diaphragm are not shown. Students can change Breathing rate and Tidal volume and compare what happens. Use it for biology inquiry with Grades 4–5, Middle School, and High School on a projector or student device.

Standards: NGSS MS-LS1-3

What students can explore

  • Select a structure, then isolate it to look closer.
  • Trachea · Bronchi · Right upper lobe · Right middle lobe · Right lower lobe · Left upper lobe · Left lower lobe
  • Illustrative sequence · timing not to scale

Learning objectives

  1. 1Predict how changing Breathing rate will affect the visible outcome, then test the prediction.
  2. 2Use evidence from the live calculation and visual to explain the result.
