Archery Range

About this simulation

This simulation shows how projectiles fall and drift on the way to a target. Pulling the string left adds power and pulling it down raises the aim. The arrow drops under gravity, slows with optional air drag, and is pushed sideways by an adjustable crosswind from minus 15 to 15 meters per second. Readouts show draw and speed, aim elevation, last arrow, score and crosswind. Three camera views let students watch from the side, behind the archer or at the target. Teachers can use it for projectile motion and vectors.

What students can explore

  • Drag the string back and down, then release, and check the Draw and speed readout.
  • Aim directly at the gold once and see how far the arrow lands below it.
  • Change Crosswind to 10 meters per second and adjust your aim to hit the center.
  • Turn off Air drag and compare where arrows land at full draw.
  • Use Pull arrows to clear the target and try for a higher Score across six arrows.

Learning objectives

  1. 1Explain why an arrow must be aimed above the target.
  2. 2Calculate that drop equals one half g times time squared.
  3. 3Describe how a crosswind adds a sideways motion to a projectile.
  4. 4Adjust aim using feedback from each shot.

Questions teachers ask

Is the Archery Range simulation free to use?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up, and works in any modern browser, including whiteboards, tablets and phones.

Why does the arrow land low if I aim straight at the gold?

The arrow starts falling the moment it leaves the bow. At 20 meters and 45 meters per second, the flight takes about 0.45 seconds, enough to drop over a meter.

How do I shoot?

Drag the bowstring back. Pull to the left for more power and downward to aim higher, then release. Each end uses six arrows.

How does wind change the shot?

The arrow moves relative to the air, not the ground, so a crosswind pushes it sideways. Use the Crosswind slider and aim into the wind to compensate.
