Why a good timer changes everything in a primary classroom

A timer is the simplest classroom management tool I own, and a fun one does half the work for me. The moment a countdown appears on the board, the chatter drops and the kids lock in — especially in primary, where a race against the clock turns any task into a game. Here are the timers I reach for most.

1. ClassDojo timer

Built right into ClassDojo, so there's nothing extra to open. If you already run ClassDojo for points and attendance, the timer is one click away — handy for quick transitions without leaving the app you're already projecting.

2. Siri timer

The hands-free option. When my hands are full or I'm across the room, I just say "Hey Siri, set a timer for three minutes." No clicking, no typing — useful during messy activities like art or science.

3. Mission Impossible timer

Pure engagement. The theme music plus a ticking countdown instantly raises the energy. I save it for tidy-up races and "beat the clock" challenges — the kids move twice as fast.

4. Bomb timer

A visual countdown with a playful "explosion" at zero. Great for short, high-energy bursts. A word of caution for very young or anxious children — read the room, because some kids take the "bomb" idea more literally than others.

5. Volcano timer

Same idea as the bomb timer with a gentler theme. The volcano slowly builds and "erupts" at the end — a softer visual that works well for kindergarten and early primary.

Pick one and stay consistent

The best timer is the one your class recognises instantly. Rotate a couple for variety, but keep them visual and audible so every child knows exactly how long is left. If you want several styles in one place, KiwiBee has a set of free classroom timers — visual, numeric, and themed.
