Pollination Interactive Simulation

Science · Pollination · Grades 2–5 and Middle School

About this simulation

Pollination is the process by which pollen is transferred from the anther of one flower to the stigma of another, enabling fertilisation. Insects like bees are key pollinators — they collect nectar and inadvertently carry pollen between flowers. Students can change step and compare what happens. Use it for biology inquiry with Grades 2–5 and Middle School on a projector or student device.

Standards: NGSS 2-LS2-2

What students can explore

  • Why flowers evolved bright colours and sweet nectar (to attract pollinators)
  • How pollen grains travel from anther to stigma and what happens next
  • The difference between self-pollination and cross-pollination
  • Why fertilisation requires both pollen and an ovule (male + female cells)
  • How seeds and fruits develop from the fertilised ovule and surrounding ovary

Learning objectives

  1. 1Predict how changing step will affect the visible outcome, then test the prediction.
  2. 2Use evidence from the interactive visual to explain the result.
