Hong–Ou–Mandel Interference

—

About this simulation

Two pure Gaussian single-photon packets meet an ideal lossless 50:50 splitter. τc is the 1/e width of their squared temporal overlap. A coincidence means one photon in each output; bunching means two in one output. Detector noise and losses are omitted.

What students can explore

  • Set delay and polarization difference to zero, then vary each separately. Where does the coincidence dip disappear?
  • Indistinguishable photons arriving together leave the same output. Delay or orthogonal polarizations restore coincidences between D0 and D1.

Learning objectives

  1. 1Set delay and polarization difference to zero, then vary each separately. Where does the coincidence dip disappear?
