Claude Is Offering Free Premium Access for US K-12 Teachers

There is a useful new option for US K-12 educators: Claude for Teachers. Anthropic is offering verified school staff at least one year of free access to premium Claude features. It is for adults working in schools—not for student accounts.

Who can use it?

You need to be 18 or over and working at a US K-12 school or district. That can include classroom teachers, instructional coaches, aides, librarians, special-education staff, and school or district administrators. International educators are not currently eligible.

What can it help with?

The strongest use is preparation—not handing over teaching. Claude can draft a lesson outline, create a do-now or exit ticket, make scaffolded versions of a resource, suggest questions that reveal misconceptions, or turn your lesson notes into a family newsletter. You review, adapt, and decide what belongs in your classroom.

• Plan: start with the grade, subject, learning goal, and what students already know.
• Differentiate: ask for a simpler support, an on-level task, and an extension—then check each one.
• Assess: draft a short check for understanding with an answer key.
• Communicate: create a first draft for families in your own voice.

Why the privacy details matter

For verified educator accounts, Anthropic says model training is turned off for conversations and its K-12 terms are designed around FERPA protections. That is encouraging, but it does not remove a teacher’s responsibility. Follow your school’s policy, use the minimum student information needed, remove identifying details when possible, and never treat an AI draft as a final judgement about a child.

A sensible first try

I teach Grade 5 science. My class is beginning ecosystems and has already learned about food chains. Create a 40-minute lesson with a short retrieval task, one collaborative activity, three questions that uncover misconceptions, and an exit ticket. Give me one support and one extension. Keep the final materials easy to edit.

Read the draft like you would any resource: check facts, fit it to your students, and make it sound like you. The value is not in getting a perfect answer; it is in reducing blank-page time so you can spend more energy on your learners.
