The Sunday Worksheet Marathon
Every Sunday afternoon, I'd sit with my gradebook data and try to create differentiated homework. Group A needs more practice on algebraic expressions. Group B is ready for word problems. Group C needs foundational review. That's three different worksheets minimum, plus I should probably create extension work for the students who finish early. Four worksheets. For one class. I have five classes.
By the time I finished, Sunday was gone. The worksheets were adequate but not great — I was too tired to make them engaging. And because I'd grouped students roughly by ability, individual gaps got missed. The student who understood everything except negative numbers got the same worksheet as the student who struggled with order of operations.
What AI Homework Generation Actually Looks Like
After a lesson, I open the homework generator and select the skills we covered. The AI pulls each student's mastery data from the gradebook and creates individualized practice sets. Not roughly grouped by ability — actually individualized. Maya gets extra work on combining like terms because her heatmap shows that's her gap. James gets extension problems because he's shown mastery across the board.
The questions aren't just random either. TeacherLab AI generates contextually varied problems — some abstract, some word problems, some visual. It automatically includes worked examples for students who need scaffolding. It adds challenge questions for students who need stretch. All in about 30 seconds.
What I Do With My Sundays Now
I review the AI-generated homework and make tweaks if needed. Usually I add one or two questions that connect to something we discussed in class — an inside joke problem or a reference to a student's interest. That personal touch takes five minutes. The heavy lifting — grounded in the curriculum framework — is done. I get my Sundays back, and my students get better homework. That's not a tradeoff; that's just better.
