This simulation opens up a music box. A rotating drum carries pins that pluck the teeth of a steel comb, and each tooth rings at its own pitch. Students click the dots on the drum to add or remove pins, drag the drum with the pointer to turn it by hand, or let it turn on its own at a speed they choose. The right arrow key nudges it forward. Presets load a Twinkle melody, a rising scale or a zig-zag pattern, and readouts show the last note, its frequency, the tooth length and the number of pins. It shows that position around the drum is time, position along it is pitch, and shorter teeth sound higher.
Yes. Music Box Cylinder is free, needs no sign-up and runs in any modern browser, including whiteboards, tablets and phones.
Click a dot on the drum to place a pin, and click it again to remove it. When the drum turns forward, each pin plucks the tooth it passes.
Each tooth is a small bar, and shorter teeth are stiffer so they vibrate faster. Frequency is proportional to one over length squared, so halving the length makes the pitch four times higher.
No. Pins pluck the comb only when the drum turns forward, as in a real music box.

A virtual theremin where students press and drag over a plane. Moving left and right changes pitch, moving up and down changes volume, and readouts show frequency, note, volume and wavelength.

Students draw a single cycle of a wave on a grid, and the simulation plays it as a repeating tone. Frequency, preset waves and a join-ends option let them compare their drawing with sine, square and sawtooth sounds.

Sixteen 3D drum pads, from kick and snare to cowbell and chime, play synthesized sounds when students click them or press keys. A tempo slider sets the speed and a loop button repeats the last four bars they played.

Six 3D flute pipes with a slider ring at the top of each. Students drag the ring to change the pipe length, click a pipe to blow it and switch between open and closed pipes to see air moving and hear the pitch.

A 3D grid of 8 steps and 4 rows: kick, snare, hat and bell. Students click cells on and off while a playhead sweeps across, and a tempo slider and pattern presets change the groove.
