À propos de cette simulation

Notable People is an interactive world map by Topi Tjukanov that places names at their birthplaces. Explore culture, discovery and science, leadership, and sports and games, or switch to real place names to connect biographies with geography. The map uses the research database by Morgane Laouenan and colleagues, built from Wikipedia and Wikidata. Each mapped location shows its highest-ranked person in the selected category; it is not a complete list of everyone born there. Use it to start biography research and discuss how a data source shapes the stories a map tells.

Ce que les élèves peuvent explorer

  • Zoom into a country or your local area and investigate an unfamiliar name.
  • Compare the Culture and Discovery & Science filters in the same region.
  • Switch to real place names to match a birthplace with its town or city.
  • Select a name to inspect the available details and follow the Wikidata link.
  • Compare the visible labels at different zoom levels and discuss which names are shown.

Objectifs d'apprentissage

  1. 1Locate notable people's birthplaces and connect them with world geography.
  2. 2Compare regional patterns across culture, science, leadership, and sport.
  3. 3Explain why a notability ranking reflects source coverage and visibility rather than a person's value.

Questions fréquentes des enseignants

What does the Notable People map show?

It shows birthplaces of notable people, displaying the highest-ranked person at each mapped location in the selected category. Zooming changes which labels are visible.

Where does the information come from?

Topi Tjukanov created the map using the cross-verified research database by Morgane Laouenan and colleagues, based on Wikipedia and Wikidata. The original map retains its creator and data credits.

Does notable mean best or most important?

No. The research index measures visibility in its source data. It does not measure merit or endorse anyone shown, and coverage varies between languages, places, periods, and groups.

Is this a live list of famous people?

No. It uses a historical research dataset rather than a continuously updated ranking. Use the map as a starting point and check individual biographies against reliable sources.

How can teachers use it?

Use it for geography and biography investigations, comparisons between categories, and discussions about data bias. Teachers should choose suitable examples and guide follow-up research.
