Plant Lab: Sun & Water

Sobre esta simulación

Plant Lab lets students control what a seedling needs. They drag the sun across the sky to change light, drag the watering can over the pot or click it to add water, and use a slider to make the soil dry faster in hot conditions. Readouts show light level, soil moisture, growth rate, plant height and whether the plant is thriving, drooping or overwatered. The Sun moves by itself toggle runs a day cycle, and Replant restarts. It shows that growth needs light and a balance of water, and supports fair test planning.

Qué pueden explorar los alumnos

  • Drag the sun low and high and watch the Light level and Growth rate readouts.
  • Click the watering can several times and notice what happens when the soil gets too wet.
  • Raise the Heat slider and see how quickly soil moisture falls.
  • Turn on Sun moves by itself and follow growth over several simulated days.
  • Press Replant seedling and try to grow the tallest plant in a set time.

Objetivos de aprendizaje

  1. 1Identify light and water as things plants need to grow.
  2. 2Describe how too little or too much water affects a plant.
  3. 3Relate the sun position and heat to soil moisture and growth.
  4. 4Write the word equation for photosynthesis.

Preguntas frecuentes de los docentes

Is it free?

Yes. There is no sign-up or download. It runs in the browser on laptops, interactive whiteboards, tablets and phones.

What do plants need to grow?

Plants need light, water, carbon dioxide and a suitable temperature. They use photosynthesis to turn light energy, carbon dioxide and water into sugar and oxygen.

Why can too much water harm a plant?

Soaked soil has no air spaces, so roots cannot take in oxygen. Growth peaks in moist soil and falls if the soil is either dry or waterlogged.

How do I use it as an experiment?

Change one variable at a time, such as sun position or watering, keep the others fixed, and compare the Plant height and Growth rate readouts. One day lasts 8 seconds.
