Respiratory System and Lungs Simulation

Science · Respiratory System · Grades 4–5, Middle School, and High School

About this simulation

The lungs fill and empty as the chest changes volume. Breathing rate and the air moved in each breath together set how much air the lungs move every minute, and deep slow breaths move more than fast shallow ones. Students can change breathing rate and breath depth and compare what happens. Use it for biology inquiry with Grades 4–5, Middle School, and High School on a projector or student device.

Standards: NGSS MS-LS1-3

What students can explore

  • Watch the lungs fill and empty with every breath
  • Change breaths per minute and the air moved in each breath
  • Compare deep slow breathing with fast shallow breathing for the air moved a minute

Learning objectives

  1. 1Predict how changing breathing rate will affect the tidal volume, then test the prediction.
  2. 2Use evidence from the live calculation and visual to explain the result.
